Of Stem Cells and Roses.....

The India Story

photo.jpg
People ask me all the time how my life has changed since I got my stem cell treatment. I always reply with “it’s just normal and boring now.” Wonderfully normal and boring though it always feels so anticlimactic, like I should have gotten my life back and run with it. I should have moved to Greece, or gone back to school to be a doctor, or something really dramatic like that. But those were not the things I longed for. I wanted the little things back - the ones that when you don't have, are anything but small. To laugh without hurting, and eat without being sick, and walk without falling.

The India Story

As I sat down to write a new post for this blog, where I finally outline all the information everyone asks me for all in one place, I was inspired to update my improvement list. I fell upon the one I wrote in March 2008 and realized much has changed since then. The first thing people always want to know when they contact me is how I'm doing now...after all this time...today.... So, it seems it's time for a new list.

The India Story, Mind and body

IMG_3688.JPG
With chronic illness, it is so easy to become disconnected from the body you live in – when that body causes you to suffer. My mental perspective was almost always strong, with the will to live propelling me into each new day. But my body, housing the terrible illness, became at times, my worst enemy.

The India Story, Lyme Disease, Drugs & Treatments

snapshot.jpg
Global Post writer Mridu Khullar nailed an article on Dr. Shroff's stem cell therapy in India, fairly telling the story and accurately covering the delicate issues that surround it. My story as well as my doctor's comments were also included. Thank you Mridu for going beyond what most of the media ever does -- and reaching a place where the story ends up telling itself.

My Biggest Post Lyme Disease And Embryonic Stem Cell Therapy Milestone Yet

The India Story

I am sitting on the living room floor where I’ve dumped out two boxes I’ve been saving. They have been two of the most important boxes in my life for much too long. They are the “just in case” boxes. They have been lovingly sheltered in the environment of whatever place I’ve been living in at any given time. I always know where they are. They are kept away from moisture and heat. I have made sure they do not get too cold. They are always on a low shelf, just in my reach.

The India Story

I’ve been trying to update this blog for a few weeks now since I know some of you have been wondering what happened after my last post with the somber’ish mood. As a reminder, it was the one where I was consuming ridiculous amounts of food and trying to decipher if the short period of pain I experienced was instigated by an overzealous exercise program or possibly by a Lyme flare.

The India Story

I am back in my pajamas at 2 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon watching the movie Seven Pounds (which makes me cry every time), and dripping in Indian food. It is the latest must have that strikes every couple of days like clockwork. Yesterday was Chinese food. The day before? Cottage cheese and chocolate; alternate bites.

Drugs & Treatments

This morning, I was lucky enough to be a guest on a radio show, hosted by Wisebread's Linsey Knerl and part of the discussion included the ever so popular concept of "medical tourism." I discussed a few tips on where to start if you are interested in possibly taking your healthcare journey out of the country so I thougth I'd jot some ideas down here as well.

Surprise! More Embryonic Stem Cell Improvements

The India Story

As I approach the one-year mark of my return home from my first treatment in India, I am suddenly noticing more improvement – ironically, in areas I didn’t know I needed it. I jokingly refer to my stem cell therapy as the “gift that keeps on giving.” But really, it’s true.

After a recent discussion about stem cells and Lyme Disease on Lymenet.org, an online Lyme community, a fellow stem cell patient who underwent therapy in India chimed in to offer his experience for other people to read. I am posting his experience here with permission. I have had many requests for other patient stories and I thank him for being willing to do this.
