It seems I have to answer this, totally emotionless, once and for all. I may paste it on my forehead and the signature tagline in my e-mail. I get asked it so many times that my answer seems canned. And despite absolutely loving that I can inspire hope in so many via the phone and e-mail, prospective patients need a place to go and read this for themselves. Over and over if they wish.....

The Joy Of An Ordinary Cold

I have a cold. I’m sniffling and sneezing and coughing so bad I’ve seriously choked three times today. I hung up hacking to death, mid-phone call, on the woman at the American Express customer service number. I am semi-pouting because I may not be able to go out of town tomorrow like I had planned. My head feels like it’s stuffed with rocks. My body aches. Driving five hours doesn’t seem in the cards.

The Embryonic Stem Cell Proof Is In My Brain (Scan)

I am still marveling at the color copies of my SPECT brain scan, although somewhat in disbelief. My passion for photography does not come close to producing pictures like the ones that manifested from last week’s scan, just days before I left India. In fact, I could not intentionally capture colors so vivid, or an image so real and telling of an illness that has now officially lost its battle, little by little and day by day since my first stem cell injection December 11, 2007.

Caregiving In The Name Of A Miracle

Being in India for the second time in the midst of all of these new patients (I'm a veteran now!) has made me more aware than ever at the important, undeniable, heroic role of the caregivers here with patients; especially those here for the first treatment round.

The Indian Rupee That Knew It All

My perpetual coin flipping habits have become more pronounced lately. I believe ultimately, too much in fate. I can tend to shy away from decisions due to this maddening M.O. I've been using for years. Life works out always. So, why should I get in the way? I have been trying to get through 10-14 days of IV antibiotics as part of a preventative schedule that will make my Lyme doctor “feel better.” Sometimes I picture us both walking on egg shells, deciding when it’s ok to be a little more liberal; a little less Lyme cautious.

What's In A Cure?

I have been trying to post an update for days now with miserable success. I’ve opened numerous new documents and none of the words that my fingers type fit the page just perfectly. I have had two spinal procedures in the last five days chocked full of memorable moments; all which have rendered me wordless (and not even necessarily in some profound way). They have come and gone with no concrete ideas on what is important or relevant enough to blog about.

Mission GET OUT OF THE HOSPITAL

The India Story, Stem cells, Amy's journey

After three consecutive days of IV stem cells and being mostly indoors for days, I was more than eager to venture out of my little room at Nu Tech and out into the wonderful (and sometimes not) world of Delhi. My muscles were tight from the aches I had after the last day of IV while my baby stem cells were working their way to repair the not-so-perfect-yet parts of my body.

The Smartest Stem Cells In The Whole Wide World

Drip. Drip. Drip. I stare at the IV bottle of embryonic stem cells running quickly down the tubing into my arm. Everything feels calm and music from my ipod is helping to escort my baby cells into my body. It feels like a movie scene where opera should be playing in the background. I close my eyes and try to visualize the stem cells working. My default vision is of tiny little sea monkeys swimming (trust me, I’d never make this up) from damaged cell to damaged cell finding new cell homes to refurbish and rebuild. I try to get this crazy picture from my head, but the sea monkeys stay and I figure it’s not worth fighting.

As I rise early today (yes, again), I can feel from my room that the streets are wet. The smell of Indian rain seeps in my windows. It’s a distinct scent -- not good or bad. It’s just there. Last night brought thunderstorms that rattled and lit the skies. I watched through a gap in my curtains waiting for it to subside so I could fall back asleep. Instead, I stayed awake listening to howling dogs and the occassional tuk-tuk whiz by until sunlight. The horn-honking on the street today is at an all-time low. My world has that kind of “earthquake weather” feeling that makes you uneasy, but is too superstitious to actually consider as a threat.

A Butter Knife Breakfast and Other Delhi Delights

The India Story, Stem cells, Amy's journey

I awoke this morning to comedy outside my window, which faces the front of the building. Men, in preparation for the coming monsoon, were sweeping the street. One was not even on the street, but diligently using the broom to redistribute dust in an all dirt area across the way. The guys from taxi service across from this building were washing their taxis. I don’t get it. I don’t get so many things in this country. I think it’s secretly part of my love for it. So many things don’t make sense, and yet they still happen.
